The new stickers marking the storm drain inlets in the subdivison serve as a reminder that we are part of the pollution problem known as "Non-Point Source Pollution." It is the largest threat to waterways...and our Spring Lake is one of them! But we can also be part of the solution to this problem by following a few simple guidelines which explain what is happening right here in our neighborhood. Please do your part.
The only boats allowed on Spring Lake are those owned by residents...or boats used by our contracted lake treatment professionals. The concern is cross-contamination caused when outside boats introduce foreign and unwanted species into our lake. Every resident watercraft should be identified with two boat stickers--one on each side. If you need more stickers, please contact the Board.
Let's remember the recent letter from the Spring Lake Board, in which residents and landscape contractors are urged to immediately stop using Milorganite and to reduce fertilizer use, particularly those with a high phosphorous content. It ALL eventually ends up in the lake and is responsible for the frequent algal blooms we often see and smell in our lake.
Besides limiting use of fertilizer, one of the most effective ways we can contribute to water quality is to rake the shoreline periodically to remove the leaves and branches that fall into the lake and are washed to the shoreline. If these organic materials are not removed, they fall to the lake bottom, decompose and feed the algae. Please monitor and rake your shoreline. The Water Quality Committee meets annually and issued this report 2022 Water Quality Report on the health of the lake.
Aeration systems
A good pond aeration system will provide a wide range of benefits to the ecosystem of your pond. The majority of ponds will gain from the addition of aeration as it will improve and preserve the correct water quality, boost oxygen levels and eliminate water stratification. Here is a video that describes how an Aeration system functions.
